The weight of A4 size paper

When ordering printed matter, you are often asked how many grams of paper you want the calendar, menu or brochure printed on. Quite a tricky question. That’s why it’s good to know that in most cases the weight also determines the thickness of the paper. The heavier the number of grams, the thicker the paper often is. And the more luxurious the appearance of your product.

For printing paper we actually always use 80 grams A4 paper. This does not mean that an A4 paper weighs 80 grams. The name is derived from how much 1 m² of paper (A0 size paper) weighs. An 80 gram A4 paper weighs 5 grams.

What does the 4 stand for in A4 paper?

The 4 from the size represents the number of times the A0 sizef is halved. So an A4 size fits 4 times in the A0 size (which has a surface area of 1m²).
